What is Breast Augmentation? Also called breast enlargement. This surgery entails using breast implants to grant a fuller look to the breast or restore breast volume which is lost due to pregnancy or weight loss.
Surgical Procedures Step1: Anesthesia
Can be either intravenous sedation of general anesthesia, the doctor will recommend the most suitable type.
Step2: Incision
Incisions are made in areas where the natural contours will hide.
Incision Options Silicone or Saline implants.
Such implants should be closely discussed with the surgeon based on expectations and physical attributes, meaning it doesn’t only depend on a person’s expectations but also more importantly on the breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type.
Saline Breast Implants are filled with sterile salt water in amounts that affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast that’s because in case the implant leaked the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.
Silicone Breast Implants on the other hand are filled with an elastic gel, resembles the natural feel of a real breast. Silicone breasts are less susceptible to leakage and if so the gel will remain within the implant pocket and probably may not collapse.
Regular revisions with the plastic surgeon are required to make sure the implants are functioning properly; this can be done by an ultrasound or MRI scan that reveals the implants’ condition.
Both Saline and Silicone implants are FDA approved but at variable ages, where Saline is recommended at an age of 18 and older while Silicone is recommended at an age of 22 and older.
Both may by recommend at younger ages if used for reconstructive purposes.
Step4: Implant Insertion
Implants are inserted through a specific incision into a pocket as a sub muscular placement or directly behind the breast tissue or as a sub glandular placement.
Step5: Incision closure or sealing
Incisions are closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue, skin adhesive or tape is used to close the skin, after that the incision lines will fade.
Step6: Results obtained
Immediate results are obtained and are visible, swelling and lines will fade after a while.
